RESUMEN DEL ARTÍCULO CITADO
ABSTRACT:
Compton Duane Mitchell David “Pharmacologic Treatment of Painful Pulpitis:A Five-Year Report” J Dent Res January-February 1970; 49(1), p.183 (Biblioteca FESI Iztacala)
In 1962 B. F. Lawson and D. F. Mitchell (Oral Surg 17:47-61, 1964) initiated a doubleblind study of a corticoid-antibiotic mixture* as a pulp-capping agent for the treatment of painful pulpitis in permanent teeth. Fifty teeth of 42 patients were treated; half were treated with pure starch and half with 10% erythromycin estolate (Ilosone), 10% streptomycin sulfate, 0.5% fluorandrenolone (Cordran), and qs starch. Each patient had pain, or had recently suffered spontaneous pain, suggestive of pulpitis. Diagnostic procedures and follow-up examinations consisted of the recording of subjective symptoms and the results of objective clinical tests which included percussion, heat, cold, electric vitality, and radiographic tests.
After 92 days, 100% clinical succes s was obtained with the experimental mixture as opposed to 52% with the control starch, with 12 failures. Three teeth were extracted and sectioned for microscopic study after three days, two teeth had been treated with starch and were painful again, the other tooth treated with the corticoid-antibiotic was asymptomatic. Each tooth showed a definite exposure and regions of reparative dentin, which was probably deposited during carious invasion. In the two starch controls, large abscesses were located immediately apical to the treated exposure, but the rest of the pulp chambers were free of inflammation.
