Calcium Hydroxide Or hydrated lime - A dry powder obtained by treating quicklime (calcium oxide) or heavy calcium oxide with water enough to satisfy its chemical affinity for water under the conditions of its hydration Used to fill root canals in endodontic treatment to prevent bacterial growth (ADBQ)

Calcium Oxide - Also called "lime". The white oxide of calcium usually prepared by heating limestone (CaCO3) in a kiln. Effective in the treatment of endodontic pathology, such as severe periapical infections. Ensures specific internal permanent asepsis. Because of its exceptional biocompatibility and reaction with moisture, it will progressively penetrate inaccessible areas, without generating internal pressure, while binding up necrotic tissues and stimulating the healthy tissues (ADBQ)

Calculus - Hard deposits of mineralized material that stick to crowns and roots of teeth.(RCP)

Canal - Narrow tubular passage or channel (RCP)

Caries – Refers to tooth decay. (RCP)

Cavity an unfilled space within a mass; especially : a hollowed-out space (MW). Area of decay in the tooth. (RCP)

Cementum - A mineralized tissue covering the roots of teeth that provides a medium for the attachment of the periodontal fibers that connect the tooth to the alveolar bone and gingival tissues; composed of approximately 45–50% inorganic substances and 50–55% organic material and water; softer than dentin; histologically differentiated as cellular and acellular. (AAE)

Chronic apical abscess → see Apical

Claim - Statement sent to an insurance carrier that lists the treatment performed, the date of that treatment and an itemization of associated costs. It serves as the basis for payment of benefits.(AAE)

Contact area – Tooth surface that touches the adjacent toot (RCP)

Contract - An agreement between your employer and your insurance carrier that typically describes the benefits of your dental plan. (AAE)

Copayment: The part of the fee you owe the endodontist after your insurance carrier has paid its portion. (AAE)

Coverage: The benefits available to you under your plan. (AAE)

Crown: The part of a tooth that is covered with enamel or an artificial substitute for that part. (AAE)

Cusp - Pointed portion of the tooth. (RCP)

Custom tray – Custom-made tray to fit a patient's mouth. (RCP)

Customary fee: The fees your insurance carrier will pay for the specific procedure performed as opposed to the actual fees submitted for a specific endodontic procedure to establish the maximum benefit payable for that specific procedure. (AAE)
